Mat Shoal

Mat Shoal Mat is very coy about his background, something he attributes to his father being in "covert ops" for the CIA during his formative years. Those who know him think this is a load of crap, and that he's simply a lying bastard. According to "unnamed sources" (notably, his sister Anika), his father was a Protestant minister and his mother a homemaker, or home re-maker, given the number of times they moved. He has one brother, Tad. Their formative years were centered in Kentucky. Mat's earliest musical influence was Elvis, a favorite of his Mom.

Mat joined marching band in middle school, starting on baritone sax, but moving to clarinet when he realized he had to carry the stupid thing. He also picked up guitar and drums along the way and started a band with his best friend when they were both 14. They learned a total of two songs and went their separate ways a year later after a dispute on royalties. They haven't spoken since.

Mat's real influences are R&B classics and Lawrence Welk (his friends say he likes the sound of bottles opening). Mat teamed up with Al following an open mic night in New York. They noticed they had the same style in heckling the "performers" and, after they were thrown out, many beer lead to creative history.
