Frequenting local pizza joints on the east side in his teens, Al was introduced to the Beatles through Muzak and experienced an epiphany. He switched to guitar and grew his hair, much to the chagrin of his parents, who, in turn, showered their love and affections on his other six siblings.

Al immediately began writing songs based on his life. "Love Librarian" was based on an actual experience with a senior citizen volunteer in his high school library, although Al swears she was a hot 24 year old.
